Sermon: Make Love Your Aim

1 Corinthians 14:1 says, “Make love your aim.” That’s it. That’s the goal. As disciples of Jesus, our daily pursuit should be to love God and love people. It sounds simple, yet how often do we get caught up in distractions? We aim for success, comfort, validation, and so many other things, but Scripture tells us that love is the ultimate pursuit.

Love isn’t just an emotion—it’s a command. Jesus said in John 13:34-35, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” This verse is clear—our identity as followers of Christ is proven by our love for one another. It’s not by what we wear, post online, or say; it’s by how we love.

Living the “One Another’s”

In my recent travels, I came across a list called “The One Another’s.” It reminded me that throughout Scripture, we are commanded to not only love but also to serve, honor, encourage, and forgive one another. Genuine discipleship isn’t just about knowing God’s Word—it’s about living it in community. We can’t just attend church and call it good; we must actively care for and build up those around us.

The Power of the Holy Spirit

If making love our aim feels difficult, that’s because it is—on our own. But we were never meant to do this in our own strength. The Holy Spirit empowers us to love the way Jesus loves. When we walk in the Spirit, we can live out the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Without the Holy Spirit, aiming for love is like shooting an arrow blindfolded. We’ll miss the mark every time. But when we allow the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us, He aligns us with God’s will. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to forgive when it’s hard, to serve when it’s inconvenient, and to love when it’s uncomfortable.

Walking in Love Every Day

Being a disciple isn’t just about believing in God—it’s about receiving the Holy Spirit and letting Him transform us from the inside out. Maybe you’ve believed in God for years but never fully received the power of the Holy Spirit. Today is the day to invite Him in, to let Him fill you, and to start walking in His love like never before.
